Job Summary and Qualifications
The Laboratory Assistant III handles any/all Laboratory-related duties specific to the pre-analytical phase of
specimen processing/testing, which includes, but not limited to, managing workflow in the Specimen
Processing department, dispatching of Phlebotomists throughout the facility as needed, and performing blood
collections. Other duties include assisting the Laboratory’s Medical Technologists/Technicians with preparing
specimens for analysis/testing, up to actual test performance, as permitted by the TN Medical Laboratory Board.

II. Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalent
2. Completion of a Certified Phlebotomy Course (strongly preferred)
3. 3+ years of Phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting (strongly preferred)
4. Processing (Specimen Accessioning) experience preferred
5. Demonstrated experience with each of the required areas of expertise in section III below (required).
6. Interpersonal and leadership skills to successfully interact with all co-workers, staff, patients, patient families and vendors.
7. Basic computer skills preferred.
8. Excellent communication skills required.
III. General Essential Functions:
1. Assists in overseeing the daily activities in the Specimen Processing/Phlebotomy departments, which includes test order registrations in the Laboratory LIS, as needed.
2. Helps effectively implement new procedures and processes in the Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing departments.
3. Assist Laboratory Technologists with pre-analytical tasks in the testing departments, as assigned.
4. Utilizes computer tracking system for monitoring of workflow.
5. After completion of assigned training and proven competency, assist with pre-analytical aspects of specimen processing/testing within the testing departments up to actual test performance.
6. Assists Phlebotomy Supervisors in ensuring staffing is adequate and all collections have been performed in a timely manner according to the Laboratory’s Blood Collection procedure.
7. Knowledge of physiology and function of the venous system of the human body, and collection techniques used to draw blood from patients.
8. Practice proper patient identification
9. Label blood vials according to established procedures.
10. Distribute all specimen samples to the appropriate Laboratory department.
11. Centrifuge blood specimens per Laboratory department specifications
12. Maintain phlebotomy supplies in cart, tray and storeroom in an organized manner.
13. Assist Supervisory staff in inventory management.
14. Participates in new employee and student training as assigned
15. Supports and carries out hospital initiatives and goals and initiatives of the Laboratory.
16. Utilizes the AIDET Communication model routinely and supports its utilization among phlebotomy staff.
17. Participates in meetings, training, in services and other educational activities.
18. Presents a positive, service-oriented focus to all customers.
19. Exhibits and adheres to ICARE Standards of behavior in all areas of job duties and responsibilities.
20. Takes ownership of mistakes and notifies Laboratory management when they occur.
21. Assists Lab staff to investigate specimen collection/processing quality issues.
22. Abides by all policies and procedures affecting Laboratory staff i.e. attendance, parking, etc.
23. Demonstrates professional and independent judgment.
24. Performs tasks as assigned by Laboratory Management.
