Job Summary and Qualifications
Position summary
The Radiation Therapy Technologists works with the Medical Director, Physicist, Dosimetrist, and Nurse, in all aspects of providing radiation therapy to oncology patients which includes treatments, quality improvement, quality control, tumor registry, transportation, radiation safety support and other related duties.
Behavioral characteristics
- Manually calculates and/or verifies monitor units' calculations
- Prepares room and equipment for patient by gathering all necessary equipment and setup devices
- Uses hand and couch controls, sets appropriate treatment unit parameters
- Activates the treatment unit and delivers the prescribed dose of radiation
- Obtains appropriate port films on patients when prescribed; makes adjustments in field placement as needed
- Maintains visual and/or audible communication with the patient during treatment
- Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems · Instructs and educates patients and families
- Develops films, stocks darkroom and maintains processor chemistry
- Provides age and culturally appropriate care
- Orients and mentors new staff members
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required
- Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department
- Attend Code of Conduct training course annually
- Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct
- Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct
- Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)
Position Responsibilities
- Prepares room and equipment for patients and assists in transfer of patients to treatment couch. Assists in treatment rooms: Simulator, Accelerator, Block Cutting/and or shaping, and Dosimetry.
- Explains procedures to patients, provides communication during treatments and follows procedures if an emergency arises during therapy treatment. Explains treatment area set-up procedures to patients and reassures and encourages them during an often-lengthy process
- Checks prescriptions, diagnosis, chart, and patient ID in both E-chart and paper chart.
- Checks daily monitor units and delivers prescribed dos
- Maintains records of daily treatments including entering treatment information in patient’s chart for daily reference to treatment set-up and keeping charts up to date with chart checks.
- Observes patient for unusual reactions and events and reports these to Radiation Oncologist.
- Maintains patient markings under supervision of Radiation Oncologist. Marks borders of treatment area(s) on patient’s skin in Simulator Rom. Applies tattoos after set-up approved by the Radiation Oncologist.
- Takes photographs of patient’s face and treatment areas and transfers them to patient’s E-chart and paper chart for documentation.
- Draws diagrams of treatment areas on patients' paper chart.
- Assists in observance of patient during daily treatment with the Audio-Visual monitoring. Follows all safety rules and hospital/department policies.
- Is able to perform monthly QA congruency film on Simulator.
- Performs daily warm-up and shut down of Linear Accelerator and Simulator machine dependent on rotation.
- Checks beam directional devices, protection devices, heavy and dangerous equipment and keeps record of same under supervision of Physicist.
- Reports erratic operation of equipment to Physicist, Supervisor, or Radiation Oncologist · Assists dosimetrist with chart calculations and m.u. checks. Understands proper utilization of computer plans.
- Keeps room supplied and ready for use dependent on rotation assigned.
- Understands and assists with CT Treatment Planning Procedures
- Displays knowledge of the portal vision image process and equipment for patient treatment portal verification.
- Assists in treatment localization procedures, simulation, preparation of treatment devices (MLC shaping and cutting blocks, and contours). Demonstrates knowledge of how to use and make treatment immobilization devices necessary for IMRT.
Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience
- American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT)
- State licensure as Radiologic Technologist
- Graduate of an accredited program for Radiation Therapy
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds
- Willing to participate in on-call schedule rotation
- Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy
Certification
- BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital
Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience
- Radiation Therapy experience preferred, to include clinical experience in therapy and dosimetry
