Job Overview: The Autopsy Technician plays a crucial role in assisting Pathologists and Medical Examiners during autopsies and external examinations,
This position involves a variety of complex tasks, including the collection and labeling of evidentiary materials, maintaining instruments and supplies, and ensuring the overall appearance of the morgue.
The technician must possess a working knowledge of anatomy and the ability to handle the psychological aspects of the job, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to biohazard measures.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Knowledge of anatomy as applied to performing autopsies
- Ability to physically perform job functions, including lifting and moving decedents

Essential Functions:
- Assist Pathologists and Medical Examiners with autopsies and external examinations.
- Collect and label evidentiary materials including toxicology and laboratory samples
- Maintain instruments, formalin, solutions, containers, equipment, and supplies for autopsies
- Set up supplies and equipment for use during autopsies.
- Weigh and measure bodies, maintaining the overall appearance of the morgue
- Take muscle, skin, bone, and tissue samples for later use.
- Handle contaminated specimens and biological hazardous waste appropriately.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with hospital staff, law enforcement, and funeral directors.
- Assist with evisceration, dissection, and restoration of the body during postmortem examinations.
