Coordinates the daily technical operations of the radiation oncology center. Works with the physician, office manager and staff to ensure that the office runs efficiently and patients are treated in a timely manner. Supports the Technical Director in implementing new policies and procedures and in attaining departmental and organizational goals. May assume the duties of the Technical Director in his or her absence. Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training

Graduation from an accredited school of Radiation Therapy.

Experience
-
5 years as a staff radiation therapist; 5 years of progressive experience in the clinical setting.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Certification: Maintains current ARRT certification, Maryland State Licensure, CPR certifications and Maryland ECE continuing education requirements (24 ECE credits). Failure to maintain certifications at anytime will result in suspension and/or termination and will be reflected on the associate evaluation.

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Coverage: Provides coverage at other offices when required. Performs any special projects as requested. Actively participates in the on-call schedule rotation. The Chief Therapist will be the primary contact for emergency treatments after normal working hours Monday - Thursday and when the on-call therapist cannot be reached.

Documentation: Accurately records all aspects of simulation and treatment delivery. Maintains proficiency will all aspects of EMR / IMPAC. Consistently utilizes the QA Checklist function

General Responsibilities: Keeps treatment/simulator rooms adequately stocked. Keeps treatment/simulator rooms and console area neat and clean. Notifies chief therapist of technical supplies needed. Reports all treatment units/simulator malfunctions to the physicist or engineer as appropriate and documents all malfunctions / faults in problem log. Observes all rules, regulations and instructions concerning radiation.

Leadership / Management: Interacts with the physician, technical director, physicist and dosimetrist in the implementation of new policies, procedures and technology. Ensures that all therapists are familiar with a RadAmerica policies and adhere to them as well as the technical principles and practice them accordingly. Working knowledge of Technical Policies and Procedures. Performs Quality Assurance Responsibilities: Reports all equipment malfunctions to the engineer and physicist.Performs weekly chart review to ensure that the charts of under treatment patients are accurate and complete. Ensures the accuracy of patient billing for therapy procedures. Ensures that staff completes End of Treatment Summaries in a timely manner. Leads by example. 80% Clinical Responsibilities and 20% Management Responsibilities. Promotes good working relationships between therapists, co- workers, physicians and patients. Commitment to a team-work approach is essential. Assists in the resolution of conflicts within the office. Demonstrates effective time management. Provides support to the Technical Director: Supports the decisions of technical director and administration when interacting with the technical staff. Order supplies in the absence of the technical director or informs the technical director of supply needs. Reviews time sheets for accuracy and submits them in a timely manner. Staffing (coverage), Staff Meeting Minutes (distributed within 7 days of meeting), On-call (Scheduling) Interview Applicants Evaluate therapy staff. Preliminary evaluations of staff to be given to the technical director within 10 days of request. Assists with the coordination of in-service and continuing education meetings. Weekly report on statistical data for department and submits them to the technical director. Develop internal processes within the office to improve workflow.

Meetings: Attends scheduled meetings as required, including: Technical Staff Meeting, Chief RTT, QMP, INServices and educational seminars sponsored by the organization. Attend Leadership and Development classes when requested.

Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Professional Interaction: Interacts professionally with the patient and family members with the ability to evaluate the patient's condition to inform the physician if his/her attention is needed. Documents in the patient chart any symptoms or problems pertaining to the patient. Promotes a patient friendly environment. Demonstrates concern for patient comfort. Treats patients and family members with courtesy and respect. Supports decisions of the Chief Therapist, Technical Director, and Chief Physicist when interacting with staff therapist. Works with the physician, office manager, nurse, physicist and therapy staff to ensure smooth operations and that the patients are treated in a timely manner. Establishes and implements a staffing rotation schedule to cover all areas efficiently. Ensures the therapy department is represented at all chart rounds by implementing a rotation schedule whereby the chief therapist will attend chart rounds bi-weekly. Ensures necessary corrective measures are addressed.

Quality Assurance: Actively participates in all QA procedures by ensuring all aspects of weekly chart review are completed by the team. Performs TLD's , Diodes, or One Dose for dose verification according to protocol and documents appropriately. Completes end of treatment summaries. Verifies all SSD's Takes all necessary portal images on all patients. Documents their status (OK / R) appropriately in chart. Displays film badge and ID badge in an appropriate manner. Ensures charts of under treatment patients are accurate and complete. Emphasizes quality improvement in patient satisfaction by promoting an atmosphere of patient first. Strives for obtaining and maintaining patient satisfaction survey results at an acceptable level in accordance with department goals. Assists the Technical Director in obtaining data pertinent for annual focus / outcome studies. Performs monthly technical peer reviews and monthly recaps as requested.

Scheduling: Schedules all simulation and treatment procedures. Appropriately schedules patients to ensure smooth daily operations. Provides patient with initial appointment and treatment calendar. Assists the Physician, Office Manager, and Chief Therapist in maintaining smooth operations for each office.

Simulation: Operates the CT simulator, and lasers, as prescribed by the physician. Demonstrates ability to perform morning quality assurance procedure, emergency shutdown procedure, and follows guidelines of the operation manuals for the CT Scanner. Performs Ultrasound, HDR, and Mold Room duties as required. Performs and maintains credentialing for catheterizations, urethragrams, oral, and IV Contrast (Auto Injectors). Consistently performs time out procedure and provides patient with information on what to expect during the simulation procedure. Fabricates immobilization devices. Verifies all necessary consent forms are signed and witnessed prior to any procedure being performed (IV Consent). Maintains credentialing. Uses the EMR policy and procedures manual. Completes all appropriate forms, photographs, and QCL items, including billing appropriately.

Teamwork: Interacts professionally with all other departments. Works well with others by maintaining and promoting a positive attitude within the therapy team. Interacts with the physician, physicist, chief therapist and technical director in the implementation of new policies, procedures and technology. Communicates effectively with the appropriate source relaying concerns of staff therapists. Notes when supplies need ordering, and relays to appropriate source.

Training: Oversees training of radiology and / or radiation therapy students and shadow students. Completes all necessary student / visitor forms and forwards them to technical director. Oversees the orientation and training of new staff to include the credentialing of therapy staff prior to being allowed to treat or simulated independently. Ensures that all therapists have the proper skill levels to perform their daily responsibilities.

Treatment Delivery: Operates the linear accelerator(s) including, Portal Vision, OBI, Cone Beam CT, Respiratory Gating, and image fusion. Demonstrates ability to perform morning quality assurance procedure, emergency shutdown procedure and follows guidelines of the operation manuals for treatment unit. Provides on going patient education by reinforcing physician's advice regarding skin care, diet, treatment side effects, and reactions. Provides patient with information on what to expect during treatment procedure. Accurately calculates patient treatment times. Demonstrates proficiency in the setup and administration of radiation therapy for all patients treatment procedures. Maintains credentialing.
