Peraton drives missions of consequence spanning the globe and extending to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. As the worlds leading mission capability integrator and transformative enterprise IT provider, we deliver trusted and highly differentiated national security solutions and technologies that keep people safe and secure. Peraton serves as a valued partner to essential government agencies across the intelligence, space, cyber, defense, civilian, health, and state and local markets. Every day, our employees do the cant be done, solving the most daunting challenges facing our customers.
Responsibilities
Peraton is hiring an Oceanographer/Programmer/Physicist who will develop, upgrade and maintain the analytical and software systems necessary to conduct research into global and regional ocean modeling and ocean dynamics in support of the Naval Research Laboratory.
The candidate will execute ocean models and develop software to analyze and validate performance and skill of the models. These models may be executed on local cluster of CPUs and also in a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. The candidate must be able to troubleshoot/debug software. Novel approaches to analyses are encouraged. Being able work and collaborate with other scientists is imperative. The candidate will be required to document software and thus, must have good technical writing skills.
Candidates will be supporting one of the three areas below based on individuals experience.
- This work includes optimization of underwater, airborne and satellite observing systems, representation of ocean processes affecting temperature, salinity, and mixed-layer depth, uncertainty analysis in coupled systems, and ensemble and probabilistic ocean forecasting.
- High priority efforts presently include automated targeting for unmanned ocean observing systems, representing probability in ocean/acoustic systems, and forecast correction using satellite-observed surface heat fluxes.
- This long-term work is developing cutting edge capabilities that transition to operational forecast centers.
OR
- Problems that must be addressed cover a wide scope of physics including surface waves, thermohaline circulation, nearshore circulation, estuarine and riverine modeling, Arctic ice modeling, internal waves and ocean/atmosphere coupling.
- This challenging work includes processing and analysis of satellite and in water observations, construction of numerical model systems and assimilation for predicting the ocean environment.
- This work is long term, and the end goal is to build cutting edge technology systems that transition to operational forecast centers.

Qualifications
Requires a Bachelors degree in a technical field and 5+ years of experience, Masters degree 2+ years of experience or PHD and 0 years of experience.
Ideal candidate will have extensive Physics and Mathematics and knowledge of Physical Oceanography or geophysical fluid flow is essential.
Required skills:
- Linux-based systems (c-shell, bash, t-shell, or others)
- Python programming for a range of data analysis functions, graphics, model output analysis-postprocessing.
- Navigating HPC systems for job execution and post-processing of results.
- Scripting knowledge to configure, run model jobs, post-process results.
- FORTRAN, C or C++ and MPI experience to make modifications to ocean model code bases.
- Technical writing and communication
Knowledge in:
- Models of the ocean, surface waves, ice, and/or atmosphere
- Data analysis including statistical analysis, functional fitting, EOF analysis, ANOVA, and/or Fourier analysis
- Optimal estimation, data assimilation, and/or statistical analysis
Must be a strong team player and work well in a team environment.
