Job Summary
  • Performs administrative and clinical duties under the direct on-site supervision and delegation of a physician in an ambulatory setting.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Training
    • High school graduation or equivalent.
  •  Experience
    • Externship experience in a medical office or ambulatory health setting with experience with medical records; 1 year experience in ambulatory care preferred.
  •  License/Certification/Registration
    • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) through American Association of Medical Assistants, or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) through American Medical Technologists, or certification/registration from a nationally recognized agency. CPR certification.
  •  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Clinical competency as verified by completion of orientation and annually thereafter. Basic computer skills required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists physicians with patient preparation for examination and minor office procedures. Assists with the exam/procedures as needed.
  • Cleans, stocks, sterilizes equipment, and prepares clinical work area (e.g. exam rooms, lab, patients restrooms) daily and/or as needed.
  • Collects and processes specimens, completes requisitions, and documents in logbook or other applicable forms.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Cross trained/Serves as backup for health team members, e.g. Receptionist, Technician Health Information, Coordinator Referral/Discharge, etc. as required.
  • Documents clinically related activities accurately in the medical record. Performs patient intake and discharge functions e.g. data gathering, using nursing protocols, and discharge instructions.
  • Maintains equipment/environment and assists with medical supply requisition. Maintains logs and accounting of medical supplies. Discards outdated drugs/supplies routinely.
  • Participates in meetings (staff, safety, infection control, OSHA, CPR, etc.) and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs required patient follow-up and tracking for procedures and tests as requested by physicians. Maintains log and documentation systems for same.
  • Performs selected patient screenings and waived laboratory testing e.g. urinalysis, strep testing and cultures, TB skin testing, EKG, finger/heel sticks, and vision/hearing screenings.
  • Under direct onsite physician supervision assists with returning patient phone calls including calling in prescription refills, giving information, etc.
  • Under direct onsite physician supervision prepares and administers injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular methods (deltoid, gluteal, vastus lateralis sites only) Certified Medical Assistant only.
