Job Summary

Assists physician with routine to complex invasive diagnostic and therapeutic cardiovascular procedures. Responsible for patient management prior to, during and after the procedure. The incumbent in this position will work in a multidisciplinary lab, working with a variety of service lines, in addition to diagnostic cardiac procedures.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training:

High school degree or GED diploma is required, completion of a Cardiovascular Technologist training program and/or related college level education in basic sciences.

 

Experience:

6 months Cardiovascular Lab procedural experience preferred.

License/Cert/Reg:

Registration as Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or another credentialing body approved by the Maryland Board of Physicians. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required within one year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  2. Administers contrast media into the coronary arteries as directed by a Cardiologist during a cardiac catheterization procedure. Recognizes the effect of pathology and vital signs to determine the amount of pressure of each hand injection.
  3. Applies knowledge of the normal physiologic and electrocardiographic sequences of cardiac contraction and recognizes both minor and dangerous arrhythmia. Provides appropriate patient care as required.
  4. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of Cath Lab and CVI procedures and acts as a preceptor for new staff.
  5. Functions as a first assistant to the physician by aiding in the manipulation and placement of guide wires and catheters. Administers contrast media in accordance with physician instruction.
  6.  Maintains adequate basic interventional and cardiac supplies. Orders supplies from outside vendors in hospital purchasing system. Assists supervisor with all aspects of inventory control.
  7. Maintains all appropriate patient record and department check sheets. Correctly enters patient and supply information into the MacLab and/or hospital computer system.
  8. Assists and scrubs in with the physician in angiographic, therapeutic, and interventional imaging procedures. Performs electrophysiology and ablation procedures. Provides quality patient care and monitoring during all phases of the procedure in accordance with physician instructions and established policy. Has working knowledge of all equipment, inventory, and location of supplies. Operates emergency equipment safely.
  9. Performs hemodynamic physiologic patient monitoring, recording calculations of cardiovascular procedures.
  10. Responds to on-call emergencies in accordance with department policy.
  11. Responsible for post-procedural duties including observation and management of catheter insertion site and patient discharge instructions. Provides patient transportation and communicates patient care status to receiving care unit.
  12. Responsible for pre-procedural duties such as sterile tray preparation, procedural patient education, and confirmation of required lab work and patient medical history, including indications for the study and all previous related exams.
  13. Schedules and maintains orderly patient flow.
  14. Performs daily and weekly infection control measures and stocking of supplies.
  15. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.
