  • Job Summary
    • Possesses and demonstrates adequate knowledge to provide respiratory care to neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients with technique appropriate to chronological, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Respiratory care delivered is ordered by physician according to established standards practice and protocols.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Minimum Qualifications
      • Graduate of an AMA accredited program in respiratory care
      • Possesses and maintains Maryland Respiratory Therapist licensure
      • Initial ACLS and PALS certifications to be obtained with first 12 months of employment and maintains certification
      • Initial NRP and/or STABLE certification to be obtained within the first 12 months of employment and maintains certification
      • If RRT eligible must past RRT exams within one (1) year of employment

      • One year acute care experience preferred

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
    • Manages mechanical ventilation/CPAP; both invasive and noninvasive to patients of all ages to ensure their physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs are met; while complying with all hospital, governmental and regulatory standards.  Completes assessments as required.
    • Effectively performs his/her duties within the Blood Gas Lab by completing daily OPL QC, changing cartridges and running CVP, documenting temperature and barometric pressure daily and addressing pending laboratory samples during his/her shift.  Contacts vendor to troubleshoot analyzer. Competent at obtaining and running arterial blood samples and competent at running other samples as ordered.  Communicates critical values to providers/nursing and documents patient settings and Allen Test results in EMR when required.
    • Effectively plans his/her shift so that all care is provided documented and charged for within the scheduled shift.
    • Removes equipment from patient rooms, returns to department for cleaning, processing, reassembly and documenting OPV as required.  Makes sure supply areas are stocked, that patient rooms have oxygen and air flow-meters (when applicable), and oxygen tanks are replaced on nursing units each shift.  Completes maintenance and biomed service requests as needed.
    • Effectively utilizes the EMR to review patient data and provider orders throughout the shift.
    • Communicates changes in the respiratory therapy care plan and patient’s condition to providers and primary care nurse.  Effectively communicates report to oncoming therapists at shift change using the SBAR methodology.
    • Facilitates workflow efficiency, monitoring interdepartmental systems and processes, departmental policies and procedures and making recommendations for improvement.
