Job Summary
-
Performs a variety of routine and specialized chemical, serological, microscopic, and bacteriological tests. Makes analytical diagnoses and prepares reports for use in the treatment of disease.

Minimum Qualifications
-
One year of prior supervised technical experience in a licensed clinical laboratory under the supervision of a board certified pathologist.

A passing score in the U.S. Public Health Service proficient examination for Clinical Laboratory Technologists.

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemical Science, Biology or related field from an accredited institution unless hired into position to 2/28/92 based on CLIA standards and regulations (must have a letter of good standing on file by pathologist) OR

Preferred Qualifications

A MT(ASCP) or equivalent certificate from a national agency in the field of laboratory medicine (i.e., MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), NRCC(CC), CLT(HHS), CLA(NCA), etc.)

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Processes specimens ensuring accuracy of identification; confidentiality of information; and appropriate preparation, storage, and transportation; may perform specimen procurement as required.

Operates and maintains laboratory equipment in areas of assignment; troubleshoots problems; and validates and documents information as required per standard protocol.

Participates in surveys, conducts established quality control of procedures, evaluates results, implements corrective action when indicated, and ensures accuracy of test results.

Prepares, evaluates, and labels reagents, media, etc., per procedure. Performs a wide variety of routine and special procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual or automated methods; calculates and reports results as established; consults with pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.

Maintains inventory supply; stocks and maintains neat, orderly work area.

Sets up and evaluates new procedures; performs method correlation, verification and validation per SOP as assigned.

Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams; participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Trains new associates and students in new procedures; evaluates and documents performance.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
