  • Job Summary
    • Provide direct and indirect care to critically ill patients. Respond to emergency situations throughout the hospital as assigned to Code Blue, Rapid Response, and Stroke teams.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Experience
      • Associate Degree in Nursing accepted, BSN preferred
      • 3 to 5 years minimum experience as a critical care nurse in a hospital environment

      • Maryland State License
      • Current ACLS and/or BCLS Certification

      • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

      • Ability to quickly identify and respond to patient care emergencies.
      • Ability to assist with bedside procedures including intubation, central line placement, cardio-version etc.
      • Understands and maintains appropriate Infection Control standards.
      • Ability to coordinate services offered by multiple disciplines.
      • Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Provide direct care to critically ill patients to include;  physical assessment, record and interpret V/S, labs, ABG’s, EKG’s, maintain accurate I&O records, medicine administration and complex IV therapy, care and management of multiple IV sites and lines (arterial, swann ganz catheters, venous, central and peripher), manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation and complex respiratory therapy, assist with bedside procedures, wound management, and mobilization and personal hygiene activities.
    • Utilize various equipment and monitors to assess patient condition, provide therapeutic and diagnostic interventions, and respond to patient emergencies.
    • Organize and safely transport patients to other departments.
    • Keep Physician notified of changes in patient condition.
    • Interact with families to provide information and support.
    • Document all aspects of patient care and planning including response to therapy.   
    • Provide guidance for the day to day supervision of Certified Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretary and potentially other RN’s in Charge Nurse role.
    • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
