  • Job Summary
    • Clinically competent professional who is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to patients having surgical intervention.  Incorporating current clinical knowledge with established nursing practice and performing nursing interventions utilizing the nursing process.  Delivers care to a patient population, neonate to geriatric as defined in the unit specific structural standards
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Experience
      • BSN preferred, Associates Degree in Nursing accepted
      • 1 to 3 years experience as a Registered Nurse in a operating room environment

      • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Acts as circulator and/or scrub nurse during the intraoperative phase.
    • Assumes on-call responsibilities for surgical emergencies as assigned and is promptly available by beeper/phone.
    • Performs a peri-operative assessment. Assessment data shall include, but is not limited to, verification of the patient’s identity, operative procedure, surgeon and consent.
    • Verifies the patient’s allergies, NPO status and whether or not the patient has voided.
    • Validates the presents of current history and physical, laboratory results, perioperative orders and the results of diagnostic tests for abnormal values and conveys such information appropriately.
    • Verify with the scrub the necessary instruments, supplies and equipment, are available and  in working condition
    • Proceeds with patient and Anesthesia to OR only after all preoperative(informed consents, site marking, valid H&P, labs, etc.) documentation is completed unless surgery is an extreme emergency.
    • Confirm the medication name, strength, dosage, and expiration date with scrub. Know that every drug on the sterile field is labeled.
    • Follows standard procedures for surgical intervention, along with the preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists.
    • Performs intraoperative sponge and needle counts according to policy and procedure.
    • Applies principles of proper body alignment during the transfer and positioning of patients.
    • Preps the surgical site using appropriate aseptic technique and enforces prep dry time per manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Ensures safety of the patient during the use of electrical equipment.
    • Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens.
    • Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the perioperative phase.
    • Ensures and respects the patient’s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
    • Assures the Environment of Care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines.
    • Labels and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate persons.
    • Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrences noted during the perioperative phase.
    • Revises the physician’s preference cards and communicates changes to appropriate personnel.
    • Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and /or instrumentation.
    • Supervises licensed and non-licensed team members on nursing unit by providing working leadership.
    • Completes EMR including charge capture in addition to any other required written documentation.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned
