  • Job Summary
    • The Emergency Department Technician provides support to nursing and physician staff by performing tasks that assist in the care and treatment of patients with illnesses and injuries. 
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Experience
      • High school diploma or equivalency.
      • One year of recent emergency department experience as an emergency department technician, or one year experience as a critical care technician, or the equivalent of one year of EMT or military medical experience is required.

    • License/Certification/Registration
      • CPR/BLS certification
      • Maryland Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) License
      • CPI training within 6 months of hire

      • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
      • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Under general supervision of the RN, ED Technician performs assigned procedures including, but not limited to: electrocardiogram testing (EKG); phlebotomy; wound cleansing; initial, repeat and orthostatic vital sign measurements; application of monitor leads and specimen collection.
    • Setup and prepare patient and assists with patient exam and minor health procedures within scope of training.
    • Perform specimen collection, ensuring accuracy in identification and integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria as required by Lab.
    • Provide communication and updates to RN, Physician or other providers related to perceived reactions or changes to patients’ condition.
    • Accurately record information in the patient record, documents vital signs and procedures completed, as well as the equipment and techniques utilized.
    • Organize and maintain appropriate levels of inventory and supplies.
    •  Assist with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
    • Attend department meetings and educational sessions.
    • Assist in orienting and training of new ED Technicians.
    • Serves as a liaison among members of the healthcare team, patients and families.
    • Supports nursing and physician staff by performing tasks that assist in the care and treatment of patients with illnesses and injuries.
    • Maintain cleans equipment and workspace.
    • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
