  • Job Summary
    • Performsroutine clerical duties, such as filing records arranged in a file in orderaccording to an established system. Retrieves data or correspondence from filesas requested within an appropriate time frame. Operates telephone system toanswer incoming calls; directs callers to appropriate personnel.

      • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
      • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Answers incoming telephone calls, determines purpose of calls, and forward calls to appropriate personnel or department.
    • Takes and delivers messages or transfers calls to voice mail when appropriate personnel are unavailable
    • Re-direct calls as appropriate and take adequate messages when required.
    • Organize, assemble and maintain medical lab files.
    • Coordinate workflow in the absence of the supervisor.
    • Greet, assist and/or direct physicians and patients in a professional manner.
    • Provides backup order entry as needed
    • Maintains a working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System
    • Effectively able to utilize copiers, fax machines and other office equipment
    • Delivers reports to the Nursing Units as needed.
    • Transcribes dictation utilizing full range of medical terminology.
    • Processes charge slips for manual testing
