  • Job Summary
    • The Security Officer maintains a safe/secure environment at Montgomery General Hospital and properties for all patients, employees and visitors.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • High School Diploma or equivalent
    •  
    • Experience
      • 1 year of experience in security or law enforcement
      • Prior security experience in a healthcare environment is preferred
    •  
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • PR-24 and use of Handcuffs Basic Course Certification and in-service training in managing aggressive/violent patient behavior.
      • Basic Security Officer IAHSS certification preferred.
      • SPO Certification required within six months of hire.
      • Active Driver’s License.

      • Ability to communicate with all levels of internal and external customers
      • Ability to write accurately and comprehensively   
      • Basic Computer  
      • Working knowledge of basic criminal law, investigative procedures and Maryland health General Articles pertaining to civil custody of psychiatric patients.
      • HIPAA polices on Confidentiality
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Security Maintenance:  Oversees and implements measures to ensure the safety and security of the MMMC campus.  
      • Patrols all interior and exterior areas of MMMC owned and leased properties while operating an MMMC vehicle.  
      • Assesses and evaluates the activities on the shift and makes appropriate decisions as required by the circumstances. 
      • Provides response/resolution to emergency situations such as violence, fire, theft and emergency preparedness codes. 
      • Effectively resolves confrontational situations, including subduing, detaining, and arresting unruly and/or dangerous persons on hospital premises
      • Effectively diffuses situations.
      • Maintains civil custody of emergency psychiatric patients deemed “imminently dangerous to self or others” including searching such patients for dangerous items.
      • Locks/unlocks doors/alarms to provide access control for staff and visitors throughout the campus. 
      • Provides timely response to all service calls for Security.  
      • Enforces applicable laws' and Security/Safety related hospital policies
      • Maintains daily written reports of shift activities, patient contacts, and unusual incidents.
      • Maintains a safe/secured landing zone for helicopter transport of patients.
      • Consults with and seeks administrative approval from the director and other lead officers as required by the circumstances.
      • When necessary, performs duties of Lead Security Officer.
    • Support:  Acts as a resource to hospital staff and visitors with regard to crime prevention.
      • Provides escorts on request for staff and visitors to parking areas or other locations on campus. 
      • Provides vehicle jump starts and assists with contracting towing services for disabled vehicles.
      • Provides custody/transfer/storage of MMMC bank deposits, Pt. valuables/payments and found property.
    • Development:  Participates with supervisors in identifying learning needs. 
      • When learning needs are identified, participates in training and development activities.
      • Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department.
      • Completes all mandatory requirements within allotted timeframe for completion (License, PPD, Competencies, etc.)
    • Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments.
      • Participates in departmental projects.
      • Participates in interdepartmental activities when asked.
      • Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions
