Job Summary

Responsible for the preparation and preservation of surgical tissue specimen and cytopathology specimens submitted to the Laboratory for gross examination, fixing, embedding, sectioning and staining before being submitted to the Pathologists for microscopic examination and diagnosis.
Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

Associates degree or equivalent in Laboratory Science or Biological Sciences

One year experience in histology techniques is required.

ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.

Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Prepares blocks of tissue for slide mounting in order to facilitate diagnosis.
-
Embeds cuts and stains processed tissue.
-
Log in specimens.
-
Perform tissue embedding in paraffin, cutting, sectioning, staining, and mounting on slides.
-
Prepare regular and special reports on procedures performed on individual specimens and processing of tissues through the laboratory.

Maintain logs and prepares regular reports regarding the maintenance of equipment.

Accessions specimens into the laboratory information system.
-
Prepare specimens for processing and perform quality control on a daily basis.

Assist on bone marrow procedures.
-
Assist with autopsy preparation performance and clean up.

Maintain chemical inventory.
-
Assist with specimen grossing as needed.

Accurately file slides and blocks and prepares routine reagents in compliance with universal precautions.

Processes phone requests and questions in order to provide timely, effective laboratory information services.

Direct proper processing of human derived tissue and fluids to ensure preservation of cellular structure and microscopic elements.

Processes and stains human derived fluids for cytological evaluation.
-
Obtain specimens from surgery and documents specimen by logging in and assigning accession numbers.

Responsible for all specimens requiring special handling, processing or staining when necessary in order to arrive at a more accurate diagnosis.

Distribute results to primary and referral physicians.

Order all supplies, reagents and equipment necessary for completion of histology and cytology.

Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of all lab and Histology equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned.
