Job Summary

The Director InfectionPrevention is accountable for the development, implementation and evaluation of the Infection Control program for the MedStar National Rehabilitation Network (MNRN). The incumbent for this role should be a self-starter that brings together various clinical and non-clinical team members to ensure compliance with infection control standards for various regulatory agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required, masters degree in health administration, nursing, or allied health preferred.

Experience
-
At least seven-to-ten years experience in an acute inpatient rehabilitation care setting in case management and/or patient evaluations roles or in insurer organizations responsible for rehabilitation case management.

License/Certification/Registration

CPR certification required; DC Registered Nurse license required; Infection Control certification preferred

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Functions as a role model for the practice of infection control and nursing through demonstration of professional conduct and ethical standards practice.

Develops and implements the infection control (safety) content for orientation of new employees throughout the network.

Provides yearly updates on Bloodborne pathogens, Tuberculosis, standard precautions and resistant organisms.
-
Prepares, reviews, and revises all infection control and sterile processing policies and plans for MNRN.

Develops goals, objectives, and implementation strategies pertaining to Infection Control, Nursing Services and other service areas of the hospital.

Develops the Infection Control plan for MNRN in collaboration with the Infection Control Committee.

Identifies epidemiological significant organisms.
-
Ensures appropriate identification of patients with epidemiologically significant organisms.
-
Communicates Infection control interventions with the interdisciplinary team.
-
Implements infection control practices.
-
Monitors and assists in the control of spread of infectious disease according to surveillance protocol established by the Infection Control Committee.

Monitors patients' laboratory data and notifies appropriate team members of findings.
-
Summarizes and evaluates lab data and reports findings to the Infection Control committee.
-
Identifies epidemiological significant organisms and takes action to isolate the patient as quickly as possible.
-
Implements appropriate isolation techniques.
-
Tracks and trends the identification of nosocomial infections.
-
Identifies reportable organisms.
-
Reports the organism to appropriate public health officials.
-
Prepares reports related to nosocomial infection rates to the infection control committee, safety committee, medical staff and the board of directors.
-
Provide effective and efficient information to staff, patients and families regarding isolation and patient care activities.
-
Provide evaluation services including review of pertinent patient history information, performance of assessment, determination of recommendations and documentation of results.

Consults with physicians and other team members regarding isolation and specific treatment plan as indicated.

Act as a liaison with admissions, physicians and the nursing units to facilitate admission of isolation patients.

Direct and implement service specific policies for team members who perform duties in sterile processing service (SPS) area.

Supervise and evaluate infection Control Assistant's activities in SPS.

Monitor team members from nursing, PT, OT and transportation who perform duties in SPS.

Educate above team members annually and as needed on SPS safety.
-
Develops, implements and monitors budget for SPS and infection control.
-
Manages budgets within parameters and identifies and responds to budget variances.
-
Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.

Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
