To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by utilizing the nursing process to improve outcomes, to assure appropriate resource utilization, and support discharge planning and continuity of care for individuals with\:


  • Altered skin integrity and other wound care issues

  • Diversion of the urinary and /or gastrointestinal tract

  • Incontinence of the bowel and/or bladder


The WOC nurse should be prepared to provide the full scope of WOC nursing practice, including education, counseling, research, and administration.







Quality/No Harm\:


  • Demonstrates advanced nursing knowledge and practice in relation to patients with ostomies, draining wounds, fistulas, alterations of skin integrity and incontinence\: including conservative sharp debridement. Utilizes case-finding strategies to identify at-risk patients, such as unit rounds, utilization of computer reports, chart review, etc.

  • Identifies educational needs of the patient/significant other, clinical staff, and the community. Assists in the development and implementation of formal and informal educational offerings, and participates in orientation of new associates. Serves as clinical preceptor to undergraduate and graduate nursing students.





  • Contributes to the development, implementation, and review of standards of care, policies/procedures and clinical pathways related to patients with ostomies, draining wounds, fistulas, skin alterations and incontinence. Participates on relevant committees, such as Risk Management, Best Practice, Wound/Ostomy/Continence Resource Team, Product Standards, etc. Assumes leadership role, per needs of specific facility.

  • Participates in research to improve practice and outcomes (eg, performance improvement process, product evaluation, etc). Takes an active role in coordination of prevalence and incidence studies, per needs of specific facility.


Customer Experience\:


  • Provides clinical consultations for physicians and staff caring for patients who have wounds, ostomies, or issues with continence of bowel or bladder. Recommends the most appropriate specialty surface. Serves as community resource for related support groups in order to promote continuity of care after discharge from the hospital.

  • Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments by patients/others as well as consistent participation in the No Pass Zone initiative by responding to call ligh



QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED\: Registered Nurse with current Florida licenseMust hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain.BSN or related bachelor’s degreeAt least 2 years’ clinical experienceGraduate of an approved WON or WOCN Educational programCurrent board certification by the WOCN Certification Board (CWON or WOCN)   PHYSICAL DEMANDS\: Must have visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform clinical tasks.Must have corrected vision and hearing to normal range.Must be able to lift, turn, pull, push or ambulate patients/equipment up to 90% of the assigned shift.Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted up to 33% of the assigned shiftMust be able to stand, walk, bend, and stoop up to 90% of assigned shiftPotential for exposure to bio-hazardous waste and known or unknown diseases.   MENTAL DEMANDS\: Ability to display and promote elements of good service.Ability to listen well and analyze needs of various ages and levels of education.Ability to access, interpret data and educate members of the healthcare team, patients, and significant others of various ages.Ability to concentrate on multi-priority activities   COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT/SKILLS CHECKLIST\: Adheres to the Standards of Practice as established by the Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurses' Society, the most current edition of the Professional Practice Manual, and the Florida State Nurse Practice Act.Refer to specific skills checklist .
