To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by ensuring optimal support of laboratory testing activities through timely and accurate specimen collection. Processes customer requests (with the understanding that patients, visitors, all hospital staff, physicians and fellow co-workers are all our customers) and resolving customer issues in an extremely friendly, courteous, professional and timely manner. Using all resources in the most efficient manner. The Support Service Techs are assigned to all of the following laboratory sections of responsibility on daily basis\: customer service, phlebotomy, specimen processing and shipping, EKG services, POC services, clerical lab duties.
Quality/No Harm\: Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all required specimens are collected and no omission errors or inadequate specimens result. Uses care in performance of duties to avoid clerical errors at the points of registration or test order from Reference Lab Requisitions (errors\: tests ordered under wrong account, tests ordered under wrong facility, tests ordered under wrong physician, wrong test ordered, or not ordering tests as indicated); as applicable. Complies with policies/procedures/processes in the collection and processing of patient specimens and provision of patient services, including all 6 service locations as applicable. Performs venipunctures with <3% recollects. Performs blood culture collections with <3% contamination rate. Performs all POC (Point of Care Testing) on the lab menu at the assigned site, correctly and in a timely manner. Participate in Proficiency Testing as determined by state regulations. Position Title\: Lab Support Service Tech Position of Report\: Supervisor/Manager Job Code\: 002058 Department\: Lab Division\: Health First Medical Group Date\: November 2020 Assures valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures per evaluation period. Understands and provides quality patient care by providing complete and accurate information on all collection materials (labeling errors during collection defined as\: rejected specimen due to manual misspelling of patient name or rejected specimens due to missing required information). Ensures the correct procedures are performed on the correct patient by verifying two forms of patient identification. Verifies orders from the medical chart/requisition. Appropriately handles medical necessity documentation with customers and later scans ABNs into the EMR for later access by the coding department, as needed for billing functions. Correctly enters all manual orders received from HFMG and Non-HFMG providers into the LIS (Lab information system) for processing. Verifies that the label (s) is ordered correctly and corresponds to the requisition. At the end of the day, verifies all manual orders collected and scans them into the EMR. Practices aseptic and sterile techniques. Reports all malfunctioning equipment (non-IT) to the BioMed department, fellow associates and management. Reports all malfunctioning IT equipment (i.e., telephones, PC's, paper printers, etc.) to the IT department, fellow associates and management. Completes specified jobs/tasks by deadline and/or provides requested information in a timely and concise manner. Maintains current BLS certification, and renews all applicable certifications before the expiration date in compliance with all renewal criteria; as applicable. Knowledge regarding location of emergency equipment/supplies and how to use such equipment/supplies. Responsible for hurricane preparedness and their particular responsibilities as a Health First associate. Knowledgeable of specimen collection requirements and provides accurate and timely Laboratory expertise. All specimens (s) are documented with the correct patient's information. Demonstrates the appropriate skill sets as determined by the "Annual Competency Assessments". Ability to perform basic computer skills pertinent to job performance, knowledgeable of laboratory systems, to include, but not limited to EMR, LIS, system scanners, etc. Monitors, complies, and performs all job functions in accordance with State and Regional requirements to ensure compliance to these standards. Offers suggestions for improvement with departmental improvements; implements Section protocols and/or department policies and procedures. Attends all mandatory meetings/in-services and reads and signs off on all meeting minutes as required
Stewardship\: Ensures all test requests contain accurate information on the order/requisition, to include but not limited to, correct patient ID, ordering physician, medical diagnosis and test required and requests a new order if applicable. Availability to meet departmental staffing demands (i.e. holidays, weekends, coverage for illness and/or emergencies, reduced operations) per department expectations. Utilizes supplies/equipment in a proficient and cost effective manner when performing various procedures. Completes all required documentation and/or required forms. Completes all annual mandatory items, including input regarding Annual Performance Review. Demonstrates effective time management skills. Willingly assists, and travels to any of the 6 satellites serviced by this group, to ensure appropriate coverage in response to patient flow. Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in workflow and processes in general. Accepts additional responsibilities to assist with workload or to facilitate departmental goals/initiatives (i.e., voluntarily works additional hours, assists management with necessary workflow and/or process changes, data collection endeavors, etc.). Reports to workstation at scheduled time, and follows breaks and lunch policies. Utilizes Kronos system properly. Accepts changes to the schedule or workflow based on patient volume.
Customer Experience\: Communicates effectively with customers (patients, physicians, other Health First associates, the public, etc.) practicing excellent customer relation skills at all times while organizing and directing the daily laboratory functions of the department. Ensures that all work areas and equipment are stocked, cleaned, and ready for the next patient. Communicates customer experiences to laboratory management in a timely manner. Proactively addresses patients’ concerns to enhance patient experience. Mentors co-workers and students’ technical development. High school diploma or equivalent with at least one year of venipuncture and specimen handling experience OR graduate of accredited phlebotomy program Current AHA BLS certification and maintained Valid FL Driver’s License, as applicable National Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited National Phlebotomy Certification Agency preferred EKG certification, as applicable Medical Terminology strongly preferred Excellent customer service skills Good oral and written communication skills Ability to prioritize and organize to maximize quality, value, service and productivity Strong computer skills Willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines. Must be able to cover alternative shifts to meet customer needs when requested by supervisor Must be able to work weekends and holidays
Ability to adapt to a combination of sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting throughout the shift. Ability to push wheelchairs, stretcher and beds. Ability to be flexible in covering required shifts (mandatory overtime). Ability to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted, several times a day.
