Job Summary


The Substance Abuse Therapist provides outpatient behavioral health and recovery-focused services to individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This role conducts comprehensive clinical assessments, develops and implements individualized treatment plans, and delivers evidence-based counseling through individual, family, and/or group therapy. The therapist partners closely with patients, families, internal providers, and community resources to support recovery, relapse prevention, and overall wellness. Responsibilities also include crisis planning, care coordination, support during transitions of care, participation in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, and timely, accurate clinical documentation to ensure safe, compassionate, and goal-focused treatment.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must hold one of the following: active licensure as an MFT, LCSW, or Psychologist; registration with the Arizona Board as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, Associate Social Worker, or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor; or current registration as a Psychological Assistant with the Board of Psychology.

  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience working with individuals with serious mental illness.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with clients with substance use disorders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Solid understanding of psychiatric diagnoses, clinical terminology, and basic medical record documentation.

  • Experience and skill in group facilitation.

  • Must complete NCI training requirements within 90 days of hire.

  • Must possess a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.


Job-Specific Duties:

  • Conduct patient assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.

  • Facilitate group therapy and provide supportive individual counseling within scope of practice.

  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation, including progress notes, treatment updates, and discharge summaries.

  • Monitor patient progress, attendance, and participation in treatment.

  • Collaborate with physicians, families, case managers, and other providers to coordinate care and discharge planning.

  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations and implement behavioral interventions as needed.

  • Follow program policies, billing procedures, and mandatory reporting requirements.

  • Participate in treatment team meetings and complete other duties as assigned.

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors, including but not limited to relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for CMC Phoenix roles, including but not limited to shift differential and other special pay practices.
