About this job

The Contracts Specialist I is a member of the commercial transactions team within the Legal Department.  In this role, the Contracts Specialist I reviews, drafts, and negotiates contracts to support the business, including technology contracts, products and services contracts, consulting contracts and other commercial contracts. The Contracts Specialist I analyzes contract provisions and partners with business leaders to protect CarMax interests and mitigate risk.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review and manage contracts for the company to ensure they provide sufficient risk protection and comply with business requirements as well as corporate policy.
  • Negotiate contracts within certain specified parameters, in partnership with lead commercial contract attorney.
  • Assist real estate attorney with drafting and review of construction and real estate agreements.
  • Partner with stakeholders throughout the business to prioritize matters appropriately and ensure all stakeholders are informed on the status of commercial contracts.   
  • Provide analysis and summary of contractual issues clearly and succinctly to a wide range of internal stakeholders, including Cybersecurity, Risk Management, Audit Services and Strategic Sourcing.  
  • Serve as point-of-contact to internal business clients for contracting needs and provide exceptional customer service. 
  • Resolve issues with a sense of urgency and remain available and responsive to internal business clients and teammates.  
  • Manage the commercial transactions email box and queue for new agreements.
  • Assist with special projects, including cross-team projects, as needed.

Purpose of the role

To perform this job successfully, the candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate legal matters with internal business clients, supervisors, associates, and management.  The candidate must be highly accountable for driving execution while maintaining strong attention to detail.  Adherence to process execution is a must.  While working with internal departments, the candidate should set performance expectations and appropriate timelines and be transparent in their communication. The candidate should have strong analytic and reasoning skills and be able to accurately assemble, organize, and present information to the business.  

The role is in a fast-paced work environment requiring the ability to prioritize competing responsibilities appropriately, and to remain conscientious, self-motivated, calm under pressure, and readily adaptable to change.  Building and maintaining strong relationships within the legal department and across the organization is critical to success in this role.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • College degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of transactional, paralegal or comparable experience; experience with real estate and/or construction agreements preferred
  • Moderate computer knowledge and intermediate understanding of MS Word and Excel
  • Experience with iManage a plus
