Master Degree

The Genetic Counselor works as a member of a health care team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. The Genetic Counselor identifies families at risk, investigates the problem and presents it to the family, interprets information about the disorder, and analyzes inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence. The Genetic Counselor provides supportive counseling to families, serves as patient advocate, and refers individuals and families to community or state support services. The Genetic Counselor also serves as an educator by reviewing available options with the family, services as a resource people for other health care professionals, and for the general public.

Master's Degree in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling

Experience:

5+ years of Genetic Counseling experience

Computer/Software Knowledge:

Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the use of Maternal Fetal Medicine related clinical, management, and financial software.

Licensure/Certification

American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified; Licensed by the state of Delaware

BLS Required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

  • Knowledge of genetics and the impact on Maternal Fetal Medicine required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
