Overview


The Medication/ Treatment Nurse is responsible for administration of all medications and treatments ( except those specifically designated for an RN) during her tour of duty, according to the established medical and nursing care plan. Works under the direction of the Head/ Charge Nurse to provide optimum nursing care to all residents on the unit.


Responsibilities


  • Receives report from previous shift, making sure that he/she has received all pertinent information on each resident.
  • Organizes assignment for most efficient use of time.
  • Sets priorities in meeting the needs of residents.
  • Continuously evaluates behavior , symptoms, reactions and progress of residents and discusses findings with Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Administers all medications according to established policies and procedures and physician's orders.
  • Performs all treatments according to physicians specific order and established policies and procedures.
  • Discusses the need to discontinue or change a medication of treatment with the Nurse Manager/ Charge Nurse.
  • Supervises, performs and/ or assists with resident care as indicated: assists with feeding of residents.
  • Assists with orientation and instructions of other nursing personnel as required.
  • Takes and transcribes physician's orders accurately and promptly
  • Orders prescribed medications : notifies pharmacy of discontinued medications: and ensures accuracy of medications and dosages when received from pharmacy.
  • Assists with requisitions supplies and equipment as needed;ensures their proper utilization.
  • Documents all medications administered as indicated in established policy and procedures and according to the Department of Health regulations.
  • Helps to maintain all unit records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
  • Reviews medication administration records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
  • Reviews treatment records monthly.
  • Reports any medication error to Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse
  • When administering medications, is responsible to keep medications cart clean at all times, especially at end of the shift.
  • Maybe requested to accompany physicians on rounds.

Qualifications


Licensed NYS LPN,BLS

1 year LPN experience
