Overview
Directs all activities on assigned tour toward the fulfillment of the philosophies and objectives of the facility. Assumes the responsibilities of the Direct of Nursing in his/her absence and assists the Director in the administration, continuity and supervision of nursing care, and guidance of the activities within the nursing department. Assists in maintaining a physical, spiritual, social, psychological, and safe environment conducive to the best interests and welfare of the staff and residents.
Responsibilities
Assists the DNS to ensure day to day to day operations and activities of the nursing department on assigned tour. Ensures that patient care delivery is in compliance with all policies and procedures of the facility.
Delegates unit level management to nurse managers. Directs and guides nursing managers in their daily work assignments.
Identifies problems and develops resolutions. Communicates same to Director of Nursing.
Informs Director of Nursing of any suspected negligence, abuse, or malpractice.
Investigates all accidents/incidents, alleged abuse or malpractice and submits written documentation.
Keeps the Director of Nursing informed of drastic changes in residents conditions, deaths, transfers, discharges, and accidents or incidents.
Ensure that accidents/incidents are reported to the proper authorities and documentation is completed. Follow-up on accidents/incidents reports.
Ensures adequate staffing for assigned tour, 7 days a week, sufficient to meet the total nursing needs of the residents.
Provides direct support and supervision to various personnel in the Nursing Department when indicated.
Deals tactfully and professionally with resident and family complaints; participate in interdisciplinary conferences to assist in resolution of complaints.
Receives and familiarized self with the daily unit shift Nurse Managers reports on residents.
Performs daily rounds of residents and nursing supervisory personnel and evaluates overall nursing care.
Ensures appropriate documentation of all residents care in cooperation with Staff Development, Nurse Managers, Head Nurses and Charge Nurses.
Attends Departmental/Administrative meetings as requested; conducts or attends staff and supervisory meetings on tour.
Assists in the development and revision of all nursing policies and procedures and ensures that established ones are adhered to.
Ensures staff adherence to personnel policies, participates in Labor Management grievance resolutions.
Attends Labor/Management meetings when assigned.
Maintains Director of Nursing advised of equipment, supplies, and personnel required to meet departmental needs. Ensures that needed supplies and equipment are available as needed.
Assists the Director of Nursing in whatever way possible whenever necessary.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree required.
Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
Education Desired
Advanced education preparation is desired.
Experience Requirements
Five years of experience in the delivery of nursing care and two years experience in Nursing Service Administration.
License Requirements
Current license to practice registered professional nursing in the State of New York.
Skill Requirements
Must demonstrate leadership qualities and management skills and have the ability to get along with fellow employees, other members of the staff, residents and their families. Must have the ability to effect good quality resident care throughout the home. Act as a role model in terms of professional skills, attitude, attendance and adherence to all facility policies and procedures.
