AECOM is currently seeking to hire a Senior Tunnelling Engineer.

Based in our Birmingham office, we have a dedicated tunnelling team working on some of the most challenging tunnelling projects across both the UK and abroad. These key projects have included Thames Tideway Central Contract, HS2, Stonehenge Tunnel, London Power Tunnels and Jeddah Stormwater Sewers.

At AECOM we deliver a wide range of projects, from client based delivery through to the detailed design for Design and Construct contractors. We pride ourselves on our technical excellence, offering buildable and safe design solutions on high profile challenging projects.

We are currently working on pursuing major opportunities on high-speed rail in the UK and overseas, water transfer tunnels, highway tunnels, hydroelectric schemes and underground geological disposal facilities for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

This is an exciting opportunity for a professional to further develop with our core team in Birmingham, whilst also playing an active role in expanding and supporting the business within the UK and overseas.

This is a versatile and rewarding role involving the technical delivery of complex tunnelling projects across multiple sectors. Your day-to-day activities could typically include:
  • Planning and design of tunnel, shafts, caverns and trenchless projects
  • Understanding, developing and learning the importance of constructable solutions
  • Leading AECOM safety in design principles
  • Supporting multidisciplinary teams in the transport, water and power sectors
  • Interaction with your team members and assisting the coordination of work
  • Communication with engineering staff as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Client interfacing and communication
  • Preparing and monitoring packages of work in line with an agreed scope and budget
  • Leading or supporting specific packages of work depending on size and/or complexity
  • Review and support work delivered by other tunnelling engineers
  • Mentoring and supporting junior engineers.
Minimum Requirements
The preferred candidates would ideally have a civil/structural and/or engineering geology/deep mining background. The candidate will possess some or all of the following:
  • Working in consultancy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Development of project plans and specifications
  • Design of concrete and steelwork
  • Design of tunnel and shaft support systems in soft ground and/or rock
  • Numerical analysis method including 2D and 3D finite element
  • Experience in writing technical reports
  • Knowledge in the methods and techniques used in the design of tunnel linings including segmental, jacked, cast insitu, sprayed concrete, masonry/blockwork, rock bolted/anchored and unlined
  • Knowledge in the methods and techniques used in the design of shafts including segmental, secant piled, diaphragm wall and sprayed concrete
  • Demonstrable experience of soil structure interaction and geotechnical experience.
  • Importantly, mentoring will be given to the candidate to support and develop their engineering knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A degree in Civil or Civil & Structural Engineering
  • An MSc/MEng in Soil Mechanics/Geotechnical/Tunnelling Engineering would be an ad
