AECOM has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Process Safety Consultant to join our Permitting and Process Safety team in the UK. You will play a key role in supporting the growth of the UK Process Safety business, particularly in the areas of DSEAR / ATEX / COMAH compliance products and supporting Process Safety risk assessments such as HAZID and HAZOP.

The Permitting and Process Safety team is expanding, and the candidate will be joining the team at an exciting time where we will be expanding the business in both established and new market sectors. The position is ideally to be based in either Newcastle, Leeds, or Glasgow however other locations within the UK will be considered.
We are constantly developing our products/services in response to the marketplace and the successful candidate will also play a part in developing products/services in response to client requirements. The role would suit a graduate scientist or engineer with an appropriate level of experience who is now looking to progress their career and secure Chartership of their appropriate institution.

We have undertaken many projects supporting clients across a diverse industry base, including:
  • COMAH projects including applicability calculations, Safety Report updates, SMS and MAPP preparations for electronic components manufacture, aerospace metals production, oil refining, natural gas conditioning and fine chemicals production clients.
  • DSEAR/ATEX studies supporting MOD refuelling facilities, a large meat production facility, automotive and aerospace component manufacture, water infrastructure projects and waste disposal facilities.
  • Environmental Risk Assessment / CDOIF assessments for pharmaceutical, bio-ethanol and formaldehyde / resin plants.
  • HAZID, HAZOP and Process Hazard Review studies for chemicals production, water and power projects.
  • Operational site SHE support. We have placed staff on short term secondments into manufacturing sites, to deliver SHE obligations, and we have conducted Corporate Process Safety Audit programs for Blue Chip organisations. The clients have covered the chemical, power, pharmaceutical and aerospace industries.
Job Duties
Teamwork
  • Play an active role in contributing to the success of the AECOM business.
  • Work in partnership with other members of the Permitting and Process Safety function, assisting the successful winning and delivery of projects.
  • Liaise and work effectively with clients and other business functions within AECOM.
Business Development
  • Support the Process Safety Team with development and growth of the business and accompany colleagues during client and site visits for pursuits.
  • Support the Process Safety Team in the preparation of proposals, job costing, assisting with the entry of prospects and opportunities into business management software.
  • Develop and maintain Process Safety marketing materials and CV’s assisted by colleagues.
Project Delivery:
  • The role will require the delivery of process safety services across a number of industry sectors covered by the environmental business line, i.e. General Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, Organic Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Power, Non-Ferrous Metals, Inorganic Chemicals, Food and Drink etc.
  • Carry out the role of scribe for HAZID and HAZOP studies and assist with meeting facilitation and the preparation of agendas. The progression to study leader is expected following experience and training, under the mentorship of a Process Safety Associate / Principal. Experience in the use of HAZOP Manager software, or equivalent, would be beneficial.
  • Provide assistance to DSEAR risk assessments including hazardous area classification under supervision, preparing reports under guidance that are consistent with industry standards and guidance.
  • Provide assistance to COMAH and Hazardous Substance Consent compliance projects including developing spreadsheet calculations, preparation of Safety Report material and supporting documentation.
  • Undertaking process safety information gathering and research as requested by colleagues.
  • Work alongside Environmental Permitting and Soil & Groundwater colleagues to deliver safety and environmental risk and impact assessments in support of COMAH and Environmental Permitting such as H1 assessments, MATTE assessments (consistent with the Chemicals and Downstream Oil Industries (CDOIF) methodology) and permit applications under supervision.
  • Provide assistance with environmental risk assessment projects and fire water risk assessment modelling projects.
  • There will be the expectation for working at client sites or other AECOM office locations as the workload requires.

Minimum Requirements
  • A base first degree in an Engineering or Scientific Discipline.
  • strong track record in Process Safety, you’ll be an excellent team player with a proactive and positive attitude and be confident in liaising with colleagues, industrial clients and regulators.
  • Excellent report writing, technical reviewing and communication skills – all with an attention to detail.
  • The ability to work as part of an established team.
  • Must be able to work on UK and US projects that require security clearance (Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) / Security Check (SC)).
  • Must be able to attend site visits in remote locations not accessible by public transport
Preferred Qualifications
  • Pertinent experience in an industrial or consultancy role.
  • DSEAR risk assessment foundation training and verification via a third party. Verification of undertaking a formal DSEAR risk assessment course would be advantageous.
  • NEBOSH would be advantageous.
  • HAZOP study leadership, which requires external training and verification via a third party e.g. IChemE. Verification as a HAZOP study leader would be advantageous.
  • Basic project management skills, including experience of programming, and budget/ financial management.
