AECOM is seeking an Entry-Level Chemist to be based in our Arlington, VA office. This position will support our Remediation team within our Environment business line.

This position is expected to begin December 2022.

The Entry-Level Chemist will serve as a team member in the office and the field, working with and in support of project managers and project assistants.

Our teams work on complex remediation projects, pulling the right resources from across the company to support project needs. The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope

  • Collect and enter data, and apply technical principles and theories

  • Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance

  • Work with minimal supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member

  • Perform data review and validation for multi-media data

  • Ensure project-specific data requirements are met

  • Support field efforts by preparing sampling plans and field documentation

  • Manage data flow from the laboratory to final reporting

  • Research environmental laboratory practices and methodologies

  • Prepare proposals, procures, and oversee laboratory services and invoice approvals

  • Conduct field and laboratory technical system audits

  • Prepare technical reports and papers

  • Coordinate with end user to define data quality requirements and to help assure that data are usable and meet end-use objectives

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or related scientific field

  • Due to the nature of work, U.S. Citizenship is required

  • Valid U.S. Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience writing CERCLA Sampling and Analysis Plans for DoD clients

  • Knowledge of chemistry principles

  • Working knowledge of instrumentation used for environmental analysis (i.e. GC/MS, ICP, GC- ECD, IC, etc.)

  • Proficient in standard office computer applications and software, to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access

  • Position requires analytical and interpersonal skills, and solid planning and organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Understanding of the Department of Defense (DoD) Quality Systems Manual and the ability to interpret analytical data packages for compliance with analytical protocols and quality assurance project plans is desired

  • Ability to obtain 40-hour HAZWOPER training

  • Ability to travel 10-25% and work outdoors as needed

  • Required to intermittently drive company or rental vehicles for work

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or other related field

  • Prior experience in laboratory or environmental chemistry

  • Candidates may be asked to submit to a Motor Vehicle Record screening, drug test, and/or medical surveillance screening upon hire.
