The Opportunity
This position works out of our Abbott Park(Waukegan, IL) or Irving Texas or Minnesota locations in the Business & Technology Services (BTS) .
As the Sr. SQL Server DBA you’ll have the chance to work without appreciable supervision as a part of the Business & Technology Services (BTS) organization, maintains the Abbott relational databases including both Decision Support Systems and Online Transactional Processing.
Responsible for providing and insuring data availability, data integrity and data security. Performs routine database administration functions including database capacity planning, pro-active performance monitoring and tuning, executing security procedures and backup and recovery processes.
Supports activities and acts as a member of Enterprise DBA team and resource to various application development teams in the development, QA (Quality Assurance), and test/production environments. Efficiently works with server administrators, application administrators, vendors and consultants. Work requires the application of theoretical principles and creative/analytical techniques typically acquired in a recognized four-year or higher academic course of study. Remains abreast of database advancements and offers recommendations for use of these technologies. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective and cost efficient best practices/technology to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness. Assist the manager with all aspects of database services provided to the customer. Coordinate efforts among the team members as needed.
What You’ll Work On
Provide 24x7 on-call support as part of rotating team coverage
Defines requirements and associated designs for relational database systems.
Works closely with application development team to ensure successful deployment and performance of database applications.
Research and evaluate alternative solutions to resolve issues and recommend the most cost-effective solutions.
Lead or participate on the design and implementation of large, complex database solutions.
Consult with developers and clients to determine the impact of new and revised processes on the overall architecture of systems.
Facilitates monitors and implements solutions around data replication for multiple databases.
Implements advanced monitoring and alerting solutions for database systems.
Maintains appropriate level system documentation.
Maintains and ensures database consistency, integrity, security and auditing in accordance with regulatory and compliance requirements.
Working closely with members of upper management, drafts proposals or papers, acts as a vendor liaison, conducts presentations to customer or client audiences and/or professional peers.
Ensures the implementation of roadmaps and assignments as defined by his/her management.
Ensure data recovery, integrity, space requirements of databases through formulations and monitoring of policies, procedures and standards.
Plan and monitor assigned projects and communicate project progress.
Manage development, testing, and implementation of database systems to meet database capacity standards and sizing objectives.
Mentors less experienced DBA’s in the performance of day-to-day and project-related duties as directed.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree with knowledge of database concepts
7+ years of SQL Server DBA experience
Experience in large enterprise database environments, as well as solution delivery methodologies gained through a combination of formal
training and progressive work experience
Experience working in a SOX regulated environment
Experience with transactional and/or data warehouse practices
Experience in Database Security industry
Knowledge of programming skills such as in T-SQL, PowerShell, VBScript, etc.
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Knowledge of SQL Server native HA (High Availability) and Disaster Recovery (DR) technologies
Knowledge of Windows Operating System (OS) and clustering component
Experience in database performance tuning and optimization, using native or third party monitoring and troubleshooting tools
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree in Computer Science (CS), Computer Information Systems (CIS), Management Information Systems (MIS), a related field, or equivalent. Expert knowledge and comprehensive application of advanced SQL concepts, practices and applications; must thoroughly understand the development and implementation of a data warehousing application. Comprehensive database skills and analytical expertise are required. Has acquired progressively more responsible related experience in database development. Requires comprehensive written and verbal communication, interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, organizational, and follow-up skills, the ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects as well as the ability to converse effectively with all levels of employees. Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks.

The base pay for this position is $71,300.00 – $142,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
